What a delightful read! I generally steer clear of biographies, not that I find the subject person(s) uninteresting, but they typically read like academic history books. Decoding the Unicorn is written in a narrative style that will have you turning pages like it was written by your favorite detective novelist.
Ms. Causey takes a relatively unknown, yet highly significant character in history and masterfully weaves his life into a highly relatable story. Her masterful account of Dag Hammarskjöld's legacy will keep you thoroughly entertained. Highly recommended.

Author Sara Causey’s comprehensive biography on the legacy of Dag Hammarskjöld is hard to put down. As I read the book, I got to know Hammarskjöld as a person, understanding the values that led him to his decisions. The book analyzed how his family, childhood, and spiritual beliefs shaped his ideals of peace and global interdependence between nations. Understanding his motivations made the book much more exciting than simply stating facts about his service in Sweden and the world.
Section after section, his meetings with world leaders and travels to other nations were interspersed with his work behind the scenes. Entries from his journal illuminated the work he kept private from the press and elaborated on how his work shaped the modern world. His actions as Secretary-General of the United Nations were brought to life.
Reading about his tireless work to mediate between the East and West during the Cold War – with impartiality and a vision for peace – was never dull. Crucial events, such as his creation of the United Nations Emergency Force to aid Palestinian refugees in Gaza, were gripping. I learned about how his efforts prevented a third World War. This cannot be understated.
Causey’s overall thesis is twofold: Hammarskjöld sought to understand himself, which allowed him to better connect with others; connecting with others led him to strive for diplomatic solutions that fostered peace. His way of showing Christian love was to work to advance equality and human rights, and his service as Secretary-General of the United Nations proved his dedication to the cause of peace. Getting to know Dag through Decoding the Unicorn was a pleasure, and I would happily read another biography by Sara Causey in the future.

Decoding the Unicorn opened the book on the story of Dag Hammarskjöld. I wasn't even aware of who this man was before I read this book and now I think everyone should know who he is. Dag was the Second Secretary General of the United Nations and I believe one of the reasons it exists today. He dedicated his life to public service and peace in the world. The author truly introduces us to who this man was as a person, not just the public figure.
Through anecdotal stories she shows us he is really was. She shares not only the key moments in his role within the United Nations, but also the private moments, the little moments that introduce us to who he was as a man. She walks us through his introverted nature and how it was key to his diplomacy. Using his journal and speeches she bridges the gap of his private life and public persona.
Dag was a key person to the success of the UN and I think everyone should read about his life!
