Simply Dag is an intimate portrait of Dag Hammarskjöld, one of the most influential figures of the twentieth century.
Drawing from Dag's personal writings and a special creative bond, award-winning author Sara Causey explores the private man behind the public office—his quiet spirituality, disciplined intellect, and the extraordinary pressures he faced while leading the United Nations during the Cold War and staring down some of the most intense conflicts of the era.
Dag Hammarskjöld was a Swedish diplomat who served as Secretary-General of the United Nations from 1953 until his death in 1961. Known for his quiet leadership style and moral seriousness, he helped shape the modern role of the UN Secretary-General.
Hammarskjöld expanded the authority of the Secretary-General and helped establish UN peacekeeping as a major international tool. His work during the Cold War demonstrated that diplomacy could succeed where power politics failed.
Hammarskjöld died in a plane crash in September 1961 while traveling on a diplomatic mission to address the crisis in Congo. His death remains one of the most discussed and investigated events in UN history. It is the author's belief that Dag was murdered.
Simply Dag explores the private, reflective side of Hammarskjöld—his writing, his spirituality, and the personal discipline that shaped his leadership.
Sara's multi award-winning biography, Decoding the Unicorn: A New Look at Dag Hammarskjöld, is available on Amazon. You can purchase it here.
